Exploring Nelson 151: Breweries

Route 151 in Nelson County has become a destination for award winning breweries, wineries, cideries and distilleries. We wanted to share a little about our favorite breweries! Make sure to check calendars for each of these spots as you plan your visits. Many offer live music, "steal the glass" nights and other specials.

Devil's Backbone

Devils Backbone is a great beer option, and a very popular spot! During the winter months, you can reserve fire pits to huddle around, and the summer months bring live music and festivals. DB is pet and family friendly, and you can often find games like cornhole sprawled out around the property!

Blue Mountain Brewery

Blue Mountain Brewery is at the top of our list! While the Hopwork Orange and Classic Lager are our go-to's, it's always fun to check out their seasonal beers. (Have you ever tried a Key Lime Sour or Peach Gose?) If beer isn't your thing, you can find some great local wines, ciders and kombucha on their menu as well. Their food is great too! The pizzas are generously sized, the Cuban press is delicious and they offer some solid vegetarian options for the non-meat eaters. The brewery is family and pet friendly, and they often offer live music and other special events.

The Brewing Tree

From 151, the parking lot at The Brewing Tree might look busy.  What you can't see from the road is the large meadow space behind the brewery that runs along the North Fork River. Enjoy beer, cider, hard slushies (yes... you read that right!) and plenty of non-alcoholic beverages. They also make their own kombucha from locally sourced ingredients.  The food options at the Scratch Kitchen come highly recommended!

There are lots of beer options in the area - these are just a few of our favorites along 151. Look for more posts about breweries, wineries, cideries and distilleries coming soon!

Hikes around Wintergreen and nelson county

Hiking is popular in the Wintergreen area, and so we wanted to share a few of our favorites, close to Wintergreen and Marley's Cabin!
  • Sherando Lake - Less than 20 minutes from the house, Sherando Lake offers two hikes around each lake. Fall is beautiful (as seen in the video above) and perfect for peeping leaves, or visit in the summer and take a dip in the lake! (Open early-April - late-October. )
  • Shamokin Falls - A moderately challenging hike about 3 miles long. Fabulous waterfall views!
  • Crab Tree Falls - Well known for being the highest vertical-drop cascading waterfall east of the Mississippi River, Crab Tree Falls is a popular hiking destination.
  • Blue Ridge Tunnel is a hiking experience like none other. Check out the video on this page to learn more about the history and how to prepare! (Bring a coat and flashlight!)
  • Appalachian Trail - The AT has a number of access points in Wintergreen. Enjoy spectacular views of the south & Shenandoah Valley as you hike along the trail. According to the Nature Foundation, there is an access trail to the current Appalachian Trail on Laurel Springs Drive near Wolftrap Lane which also connects to the old trail as well. Use caution in winter.
Looking for other options?
  • Visit the Nature Foundation website to learn more about hiking in the area, and where to pick up a trail map!

  • The very popular tubing hill is the longest in Virginia. Reserve Your tickets early - they go fast!
  • After a day of skiing, snowboarding and tubing, pamper yourself at the Wintergreen Spa with a massage, facial or mani/pedi.
  • Don’t miss après ski at The Edge! Located slope side, The Edge is the perfect spot to grab a burger and beverage, and often hosts live musicians evening and weekend.
  • Visit the local wineries, breweries, cideries, and distilleries on Nelson 151.

Welcome to marley's cabin!

Thank you for visiting!

We visited Wintergreen in the summer of 2018 with family, and instantly fell in love. Coming from DC, the cooler summer temperatures were a welcome reprieve. We couldn’t get over the incredible views and all the things to do in the area. We bought a place in Wintergreen a year later.

We knew that our life in DC wouldn’t allow us to spend all our free time in Wintergreen, so we wanted to share the home with others. We take pride in offering our guests a five star stay with  unparalleled views of the Blue Ridge Mountains. If you are curious about what our past renters have to say, click here.

Please reach out to us at [email protected] with any questions about renting the home, and check back here for ideas on planning your stay!

We look forward to welcoming you to Marley's Cabin!
