Wintergreen offers something for everyone, from nature enthusiasts to music lovers. Each summer, the Wintergreen Music Festival brings together top musicians, young talents, and eager audiences to celebrate classical and chamber music in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains.

The festival takes place in various Wintergreen Mountain venues and the surrounding valley, including wineries, breweries, and other locations, providing a unique cultural experience amidst the stunning landscape.

Featuring symphony orchestras, chamber ensembles, and solo recitals, the festival presents a diverse range of performances that cover the classical repertoire. Additionally, attendees can join Coffee Talks with musicians and conductors or attend intimate in-home concerts around the mountain.

Emphasizing the importance of nurturing the next generation of chamber musicians, the festival introduced the LEAD Cooperative, a program designed for young musicians to learn from and perform alongside seasoned professionals. The program offers mentorship, masterclasses, and chamber music coaching.

Beyond the concert hall, the festival engages with the local community by organizing free community concerts, open rehearsals, and educational programs for all ages, fostering a sense of togetherness and sharing the power of music with everyone.

Mountain Laurel (Kalmia latifolia): One of the most iconic native plants in the area is the mountain laurel. Flame Azalea (Rhododendron calendulaceum): In the late spring and early summer, the vibrant blooms of the flame azalea paint the hillsides of Wintergreen Resort in a riot of colors. Wintergreen is blessed with an abundance of mountain streams and rivers, providing ideal habitats for trout. Head to the nearby James, Rockfish and Tye rivers, which are known for their clear waters and healthy populations of brown, rainbow, and brook trout. Explore the meandering streams, navigate through riffles and pools, and cast your line in the hopes of hooking a beautiful trout. • After your visit at Monticello, head up the road about 15 more minutes to pick fruit atCarter Mountain Orchard. In the summer months, pick your own peaches. In the fall, don’t miss out on the apple cider donuts!  
• Interested in a wine visit on your trip to Charlottesville? Our favorite stop is Blenheim Vineyards, which is right up the road (about 20 minutes) from Carter Mountain Orchard. Lovely views, delicious wine, and beautiful grounds.

When guests ask for recommendations, King Family Vineyards is always at the top of our list.  Summer weekends bring horses, polo matches and a lovely Rose. Winters are for trivia nights, family movies, bold red wines and sometimes even yoga or salsa dancing. 

King Family offers a number of options for tastings. You can do a self guided tasting or a staff led classic tasting to try some of the crowd favorites.  For a reservation and small fee, try one of the more elevated options - a Founders Tasting or Reserved Tasting.  The tours are awesome. We've taken several and learned so much on each one. Plus, we have had the opportunity to taste wines we haven't had before! (Make sure to try one of their SEVEN 2023 Governors Cup Gold and Silver Medal winners!) 

You can bring your own food (we suggest dropping by Greenwood Grocery on your way to grab sandwiches or snacks!) or visit one of the food trucks there on Wednesday evenings, Saturday or Sunday. 

Polo is an important part of the KFV experience. Matches are held at noon on Sundays between Memorial Day and mid-October. Get there early, gates open at 10 am, to grab your spot! The pros even offer lessons and clinics for both adult and youth!

​Hiking is popular in the Wintergreen area, and so we wanted to share a few of our favorites, close to Wintergreen and Marley's Cabin! 

• Sherando Lake - Less than 20 minutes from the house, Sherando Lake offers two hikes around each lake. Fall is beautiful (as seen in the video above) and perfect for peeping leaves, or visit in the summer and take a dip in the lake! (Open early-April - late-October. ) 

• Shamokin Falls - A moderately challenging hike about 3 miles long. Fabulous waterfall views!  
• Crab Tree Falls - Well known for being the highest vertical-drop cascading waterfall east of the Mississippi River, Crab Tree Falls is a popular hiking destination. 
• Blue Ridge Tunnel is a hiking experience like none other. Check out the video on this page to learn more about the history and how to prepare! (Bring a coat and flashlight!) 
• Appalachian Trail - The AT has a number of access points in Wintergreen. Enjoy spectacular views of the south & Shenandoah Valley as you hike along the trail. According to the Nature Foundation, there is an access trail to the current Appalachian Trail on Laurel Springs Drive near Wolftrap Lane which also connects to the old trail as well. Use caution in winter.
