Nestled within the picturesque George Washington National Forest in Virginia, Crabtree Falls stands as a natural masterpiece, captivating all who venture to witness its cascading beauty. As the highest vertical-drop waterfall east of the Mississippi River, Crabtree Falls beckons nature enthusiasts, hikers, and photographers alike to immerse themselves in the awe-inspiring splendor of this iconic Virginia landmark.
Crabtree Falls is a series of five cascading waterfalls that collectively plunge more than 1,000 feet down the mountainside. Originating from Crabtree Meadows, the falls flow gracefully over rugged rocks and through lush, verdant forests, creating a symphony of sight and sound that resonates throughout the area. Access to Crabtree Falls is granted through a well-maintained trail system that winds its way through the forested slopes. The Crabtree Falls Trail, a moderately challenging hike, spans approximately 2.5 miles and offers several overlooks along the way, each providing breathtaking panoramic views of the falls. The trail is suitable for hikers of various skill levels, making it an accessible adventure for both novices and experienced trekkers. The lower section of the trail allows visitors to witness the upper cascades, while the higher sections reveal the grandeur of the lower falls. The crisp mountain air, the scent of pine, and the soothing sound of rushing water create an immersive experience that heightens the sense of connection with nature. While Crabtree Falls is a year-round attraction, each season paints a unique portrait of its beauty. In the spring, the falls are surrounded by vibrant wildflowers, while the summer brings a lush green canopy. Autumn transforms the landscape into a kaleidoscope of reds, oranges, and yellows, providing a spectacular backdrop for fall hikes. In winter, the frozen cascades create a serene, icy tableau, offering a different kind of allure for those who venture out in the colder months. For photography enthusiasts, Crabtree Falls is a treasure trove of opportunities. The interplay of sunlight filtering through the forest canopy, the movement of water, and the changing colors of the seasons provide endless inspiration. Photographers often find themselves drawn to the falls' ethereal beauty, capturing moments that reflect the timeless allure of this natural wonder. Crabtree Falls is not merely a waterfall; it is a testament to the enduring beauty of the natural world.

Yes, and they are definitely interested in any snacks in your car!
Wintergreen has black bears on the mountain - they tend to shy away from loud noises and people, but they are also smart and resourceful! Make sure to lock your car doors, lock windows and doors at night, and don’t leave trash outside. We have woken up to bear paw prints on our car, and once even had a curious cub spy on us while we were eating breakfast! We’ve also spotted a mother bear with her cubs, and had one watch us from a tree as we were on the golf course! Wintergreen is “Bear Smart”. Click here to learn more.
