The Views
With 180-degree mountain views year-round, the house's ever-changing backdrop is our favorite feature. Watch summer storms usher in full rainbows. Snow blows in across the valley. Enjoy colorful fall foliage from the comfort of the deck. Wildflowers abound in late spring. The well-appointed kitchen We like to cook and hate staying in houses with kitchens that have dull knives, dated appliances, and gross pots and pans. We pass our high standards on to our guests. The cozy fireplace Our favorite place to spend winter days and evenings is in front of the fireplace. It's perfect for playing games, chatting with friends and family, or watching a movie. Two living spaces The kids and adults can't agree on the same movie? We have two living spaces for guests to choose between! Hot Tub Is there anything more relaxing than a hot tub with a view after a day of skiing, snowboarding, or hiking? Perfect screened-in porch Summer sun on the mountain can get hot, and this screened-in porch keeps the sun out, allowing you to enjoy the outdoors in a shady spot. Peaceful getaway Wintergreen is a resort community, but from the deck of Marley's Cabin, you feel like you are above the trees and no one is around you! Stargazing With unobstructed views and little light pollution, stargazing is a wonderful experience at Marley's Cabin. Plan your visit around a meteor shower, planetary alignment, or moon event, and you won't be disappointed. The sunrises and sunsets Wake up to a new view every morning, and take in a unique sunset every evening. No two days will be alike! Location Marley's Cabin is a short drive from Nelson 151 and the Monticello Wine Trail. (If you have not heard, the Charlottesville area and the Monticello (AVA) won Wine Region of the Year for 2023 from Wine Enthusiast!) There are great spots to grab a bite to eat. A few of our favorites include Greenwood Grocery, Scratch Kitchen at Brewing Tree and Three Notch'd Brewery.

Wintergreen is not just a picturesque destination for outdoor enthusiasts; it is also a place rich in history, with a narrative that unfolds through the centuries. In this article, we embark on a journey through time to unravel the captivating history of Wintergreen, from its indigenous roots to its emergence as a vibrant mountain community. Long before Wintergreen became a mountain retreat, the region was home to various Native American tribes. The Monacan Indians, in particular, were among the indigenous people who traversed the Blue Ridge Mountains, leaving behind traces of their existence. The area's natural beauty and abundant resources made it an ideal setting for these early inhabitants. As European settlers pushed westward in the 18th century, the Blue Ridge Mountains became a frontier for exploration and settlement. Wintergreen's history became intertwined with the growth of the nearby towns, such as Charlottesville and Staunton. The establishment of trade routes and the expansion of agriculture in the region contributed to the area's development. The transformation of Wintergreen from a rural mountain region to a resort community began in the mid-20th century. In the 1960s, a group of visionaries recognized the potential of the area for a year-round recreational destination. Wintergreen Resort was established, offering skiing in the winter and a range of outdoor activities in the warmer months. The development of Wintergreen Resort brought with it an influx of visitors, and the community began to grow around the resort. The resort's amenities, including golf courses, hiking trails, and a spa, attracted individuals seeking a retreat from the hustle and bustle of urban life. Wintergreen's growth as a resort community has been accompanied by a commitment to environmental conservation. The Wintergreen community actively engages in efforts to preserve the natural beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Initiatives include the protection of local wildlife, responsible land development, and the establishment of nature preserves. Wintergreen is also home to historic sites that harken back to its early days. The Rockfish Valley Foundation's Natural History Center, for instance, provides a glimpse into the geological and cultural history of the region. Additionally, the Blue Ridge Railway, a historic train route, and the nearby Blue Ridge Tunnel offer tangible links to Wintergreen's past. The name "Wintergreen" itself holds a certain mystique. It is derived from the native evergreen plant Gaultheria procumbens, commonly known as eastern teaberry or wintergreen. This aromatic plant, with its glossy leaves and red berries, is native to the area and adds a natural charm to the landscape. As Wintergreen, Virginia, continues to evolve, it remains deeply rooted in its history, paying homage to the indigenous peoples, early settlers, and visionaries who have shaped its character. Today, Wintergreen stands not only as a premier resort destination but also as a living testament to the harmonious coexistence of history and modernity in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains. ![]() Thank you for visiting! We visited Wintergreen in the summer of 2018 with family, and instantly fell in love. Coming from DC, the cooler summer temperatures were a welcome reprieve. We couldn’t get over the incredible views and all the things to do in the area. We bought a place in Wintergreen a year later. We knew that our life in DC wouldn’t allow us to spend all our free time in Wintergreen, so we wanted to share the home with others. We take pride in offering our guests a five star stay with unparalleled views of the Blue Ridge Mountains. If you are curious about what our past renters have to say, click here.
